The automotive industry faces increasing challenges from the development of complex electronic systems in all parts of the vehicle, including chassis, powertrain control, body controls and infotainment systems. In an average vehicle, there are a large number of electronic systems, all of which have to work together perfectly to deliver the quality and value to the end customer. As system complexity increases, the number of possible combinations of decisions/outputs rapidly outpaces the ability to test every decision in isolation. Therefore the system specification and design must be analysed much more thoroughly and must make use of simulation techniques to ensure that a robust system is produced. The discipline specifying these systems and ensuring they are delivered is now usually referred to as 'Systems Engineering'. To make this type of engineering possible, new techniques such as Model-based Engineering, OOA and UML are being used. This is in addition to the more traditional RT-SASD techniques. The use of modelling and simulation tools such as Matlab/Simulink (TM) has been extended with the use of tools like Rational Rose and Enterprise Architect. Each tool / technique has its own peculiarities and optimal method of usage. Our engineers are well versed in selecting exactly the right tools for the work in hand. The use of these tools is also guided by established techniques such as FMEA and hazard analysis, which are being extended to deal with system-level issues. Pi Shurlok has a strong track record in automotive systems engineering, working with a number of the leading carmakers and Tier 1 suppliers. Increasingly this work involves not just carrying out system engineering projects, but also coaching and training engineers in using the required techniques.
Our engineering team is supplemented by our industry-recognised safety experts. We are therefore able to offer the right mix of skills and experience to guide you through the increasingly complex world of Systems Engineering.
